हमीरपुर, 7 जुलाई। समाजसेवा को जीवन का उद्देश्य मानने वाले शांतनु कुमार अब तक 5007 लावारिस शवों का अंतिम संस्कार कर चुके हैं। वह न केवल शवों को श्मशान तक ले जाकर विधिपूर्वक दाह संस्कार करते हैं, बल्कि हरिद्वार जाकर अस्थि विसर्जन, पिंडदान, और श्राद्ध भी करते हैं। उन्होंने इस महान कार्य के लिए अविवाहित रहने का संकल्प लिया है।
कोलकाता से आए शांतनु का अब स्थायी ठिकाना हमीरपुर है। वह 1990 से इस कार्य में लगे हैं और हिमाचल के किसी भी कोने से लावारिस शव की सूचना मिलते ही मदद के लिए निकल पड़ते हैं। उनके छोटे व्यापार से मिलने वाली आमदनी से ही वह अंतिम संस्कार की सारी व्यवस्था करते हैं।
कोविड महामारी के समय जब लोग अपने प्रियजनों के शवों को भी नहीं छू रहे थे, तब भी शांतनु ने बिना भय के कई लावारिस शवों को सम्मानपूर्वक विदाई दी। हिमाचल सरकार ने उन्हें “प्रेरणा स्रोत सम्मान” और अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर “ब्रेवरी अवार्ड” से नवाजा है।
Hamirpur, July 7: Meet Shantanu Kumar, a true humanitarian who has performed the last rites of over 5007 unclaimed dead bodies across Himachal Pradesh. A native of Kolkata who made Hamirpur his home in 1980, Shantanu has made it his life’s mission to provide dignified farewells to the dead who have no one left.
From carrying corpses on his shoulders to cremating them, and then traveling to Haridwar for asthi visarjan, pind daan, and shraddh, Shantanu has served with selfless devotion for over three decades — without financial aid and without ever charging a rupee.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when even families abandoned their deceased, Shantanu fearlessly performed last rites. He has also vowed to never marry, dedicating his life fully to this service. Honored with ‘Prerna Strot Samman’ by the Himachal Government and an International Bravery Award, Shantanu donates even his prize money to charity.
