नगर निगम चुनावों को दो वर्षों के लिए टालने की चर्चा ने हिमाचल प्रदेश की राजनीति में नई हलचल मचा दी है। पंचायत प्रधान उषा बिरला ने इस प्रस्ताव का कड़ा विरोध करते हुए इसे लोकतंत्र पर सीधा हमला बताया। उनका कहना है कि जनता को अपने प्रतिनिधि चुनने का अधिकार है और उसे टालना, लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों के साथ अन्याय है।
उषा बिरला ने कहा, “लोकतंत्र जनता की आवाज़ है और चुनाव उस आवाज़ को व्यक्त करने का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण साधन है। नगर परिषदों और निगमों का कार्यकाल बढ़ाकर चुनाव टालना पारदर्शिता और जवाबदेही पर सवाल खड़े करता है।”
इस मुद्दे ने अब आम जनता के बीच भी बहस को जन्म दिया है। लोग पूछ रहे हैं कि जब सरकार हर स्तर पर पारदर्शिता और जवाबदेही की बात करती है, तो फिर चुनाव से बचने की कोशिश क्यों की जा रही है?

Discussions about postponing municipal elections for two years have sparked a major debate on democratic values in Himachal Pradesh. Panchayat Pradhan Usha Birla strongly opposed the move, calling it a direct attack on people’s right to vote.
She said, “The right to elect representatives belongs to the people. Denying it is injustice to democracy. Extending the tenure of municipal bodies instead of holding elections weakens democratic traditions.”
This issue is fast turning into a clash of “People vs. System.” Citizens are questioning why the government, while claiming transparency and accountability, is hesitant to face elections.
